The breakthrough shoe cushioning known as Air Max was developed by the sports apparel company Nike. Aerospace engineer Marion Franklin Rudy was the first to come up with the concept of keeping air inside a cushion. In 1977, he pitched his concept to Phil Knight, the man behind Nike.

After trying on a prototype running shoe, Knight was immediately fascinated. Nike began to use air cushioning in its running shoes in 1978 with the release of the Air Tailwind model. The Air unit, however, was hidden because it was a part of the sole.

There have been several releases and iterations of the Air Max since its debut in 1987. Some of these were completely new, while others were only minor revisions of earlier designs.

The shoes were created with performance in mind, and they still are, but they have far outgrown their original purpose of being merely running shoes. They've found their way into the wardrobes of hypebeasts, sneakerheads, and those who simply appreciate a great pair of shoes.

For lifestyle/casual wear, Nike intends to keep on making new Air Max models, while previous versions will continue to be part of special editions, collaborations, re-issues, and other initiatives.
